New Year, New Beginning, and Still Unbeaten


The Niagara Purple Eagles (11-0-1) defeated the University of Buffalo 10-2 on their first game playing into the new year of 2013 on Friday at Dwyer Arena. The Niagara Purple Eagles’ senior, Lauren Fontaine, started the tempo off with three goals in the first period with the help Leanna Kozlowski, Carleah Angeles, and Bethany Bouthiller. Followed by, senior Natasha Fryer, who skated end to end and scored two goals which were unassisted. The Purple Eagles’ junior, Paige Sasser, tipped in a goal while screening the goalie in front of the net. In the second period, both sides showed a lot of intensity, but on a great effort, Natasha Fryer, scored two goals assisted by senior Emma Hassen leading the Purple Eagles 8-1. Lauren Fontaine scored her fourth goal of the game assisted by freshman Olivia Accarso. To end the game, Paige Sasser scored her second goal of the game assisted by Lauren Fontaine and defense freshman Margot Hickey which lead to a 10-2 game!


The next day at 7 PM at Dwyer Arena, the Niagara University’s Women’s Club Hockey team (13-0-1) started the game strong on Saturday behind the stellar goaltending Danene Stevens who only let in one goal over the Coyotes. In the intense first period, senior Natasha Fryer came out strong scoring four goals and was assisted by freshman’s Margot Hickey and Bethany Bouthiller, senior Emma Hassen, and her last goal was unassisted.  Senior Lauren Fontaine did not hold back, as she scored two goals assisted by Bethany Bouthiller and Paige Sasser. The game changed dramatically the second period but that did not stop Niagara. Lauren Fontaine and Natasha Fryer ended the game with an unassisted goal each which put the Eagles undefeated still at 8-1. The Purple Eagles dominated and controlled throughout the whole game.
